Your Roadmap to a Colorado Driver’s License
Colorado uses a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system. Here’s the step-by-step process — and how we support DSST students at every stage.
At Age 14.5 — Start the 30-Hour Course
Enroll in the 30-hour drivers education course, available online ($29.85) or in-person at any of our 4 Denver classrooms ($150).
Take the Permit Knowledge Test
After completing the 30-hour course, take the permit test with us. We’re an authorized testing site — no DMV visit needed.
At Age 15 — Get Your Instruction Permit
Visit the DMV with your test results and a parent/guardian to receive your Colorado instruction permit.
Take Professional Driving Lessons
With permit in hand, begin behind-the-wheel lessons with our certified instructors. Students under 16.5 need 6 hours of professional instruction.
Hold Your Permit for 12 Months
Colorado requires a minimum 12-month permit hold before taking the license test (if under 18). Use this time to log practice hours.
Pass the Driver’s License Test — $85
Take the road test with us. About 20 minutes, no parallel parking or highway driving. Pass and get your Colorado driver’s license.
