Your Path to a Colorado Driver’s License
Colorado’s Graduated Driver Licensing system is different depending on your age. Here’s what the path looks like, and where American Driving Academy fits in.
Age 14 ½ (Under 18) — Start the 30-Hour Course
Students under 18 must complete Colorado’s 30-hour drivers ed course. Take it online at home ($29.85) or in-person at our Capitol Hill classroom ($150). Adult students 18+ can opt for our shorter awareness course instead.
Pass the Permit Knowledge Test
After finishing the course (or awareness course for adults), take the permit test with us. We’re an authorized testing site — no DMV trip required.
Get Your Instruction Permit
Visit the DMV with a parent or guardian (if under 18) and your test results to receive your Colorado instruction permit.
Take Behind-the-Wheel Lessons
With your permit, begin lessons with a certified ADA instructor. Students under 16 ½ need at least 6 professional hours — but any student benefits from real road time with an instructor.
Hold the Permit 12 Months (Under 18 Only)
Students under 18 must hold the permit for 12 months before the license test. Students 18 and older can schedule the road test as soon as they feel confident.
Pass the License Road Test — $85
Road test with us — about 20 minutes on familiar streets, no parallel parking, no highway driving. Pass and walk out a licensed Colorado driver.
