Inside the Course
Every safe decision behind the wheel follows four steps: identify what is happening, predict what could happen next, decide on the safest response, and execute that decision. The online course builds the first three skills before formal driving lessons begin, giving teens a stronger foundation for practicing the full sequence behind the wheel.
A trip across Pueblo can move from quiet neighborhood streets and school zones onto busy Northern Avenue, US 50, or I-25 within minutes. As traffic gets heavier, teens learn to adjust speed, maintain space, and stay focused, building judgment they can use wherever they drive.
30 Hours, 15 Lessons
The curriculum moves through 15 connected lessons, designed for new Colorado drivers and focused on the road rules and safety concepts they should understand before getting behind the wheel.

Behind the Wheel
Three private 2-hour lessons are included in both the $450 and $525 packages, for six hours of professional instruction. Each session pairs your teen with a state-certified instructor in a dual-controlled vehicle that has passed state inspection.
Instruction is tailored to your teen's current skill level, not a fixed route. The first lesson usually begins by confirming the basics: vehicle setup, steering, smooth acceleration and braking, turns, lane position, scanning, and intersections. From there, students progress to lane changes, parallel parking, multi-lane roads, complex intersections, freeway entry and exit, and downtown driving around pedestrians, cyclists, buses, and heavier traffic.
Parents receive a recap after each lesson, including what their teen handled well and what to practice next. That feedback helps make supervised driving between sessions more productive. The included six hours also satisfy Colorado's professional instruction requirement for students licensing before 16½.
The Final Step
Colorado State Driver License offices do not administer the drive test. As a state-approved third-party testing center, American Driving Academy offers tests seven days a week, including Pueblo exams at the Bonforte Boulevard office with state-certified examiners.
The $525 package includes the exam at a lower cost than adding the standalone test to the $450 package later. Students may schedule once they have met the state's age, permit-holding, supervised-practice, and training requirements.
Once the result is recorded, eligible students can usually complete the permit-to-license upgrade online instead of booking another DMV appointment, and the state mails the physical license card to the address on file.
Behind Every Package
Completing the course does not end the help available to your family. Students can revisit the material, families have a clear way to request a lesson review, and eligible graduates may qualify for insurance or AAA benefits.
The original student may retake or review the 30-hour course free for life, subject to course, technology, platform, and program availability. Teens can return to the course before the permit test, during supervised practice, or ahead of the drive test. They may also book instructor time to ask about a road situation or skill.
Every vehicle used for behind-the-wheel lessons has a dash camera. Tell us within 7 days of a concern, while the footage is still available, and we will review it and follow up. A young-driver discount may be available after an approved course, professional instruction, or another recognized safety program. Because documentation, eligibility, and savings differ by carrier and policy, families should confirm the details with their own insurer.
Eligible teens who complete one of our courses may receive a free AAA membership if they are dependents of an active AAA Primary Member in Colorado. Full restrictions appear later on this page and on our AAA information page.
HB24-1021 changes the education required before a first permit beginning January 1, 2027. New drivers ages 15 through 17 will need a 30-hour driver education course. Applicants ages 18 through 20 may complete either that course or a 4-hour driver awareness program.
The State-approved online program on this page already follows the 30-hour format described in the guidance American Driving Academy has reviewed.
The six-hour professional-training rule remains separate from the education change. Students planning to license before 16½ will still need behind-the-wheel instruction through an approved driving school.

A teen who completes an American Driving Academy course may qualify for a free AAA membership when they are a dependent of an active AAA Primary Member living in Colorado, and the teen membership expires on the Primary member's renewal date. Yes. The required 30-hour course is State-approved, self-paced, and completed online. Permit testing, professional lessons, and the Colorado drive test happen in person. Families may buy the course alone or choose a package with the additional services their teen needs.

If you are new to Colorado or you don’t have driving experience, we offer driving lessons 7 days a week. These are 2-hour lessons with state-certified, patient, and friendly instructors.
You are required to pass the driver's license test in order to get your driver's license. After passing, you may be eligible to get your license that same day without even having to visit the DMV.
