Test-Taking Tips for the
Colorado Permit Test

Getting ready for the Colorado written permit test?
These quick tips can help you feel confident, stay focused, and pass on your first try:

The test has 25 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 20 correct to pass. Questions cover traffic laws, road signs, safe driving practices, and alcohol-related laws. Everything comes straight from the Colorado Driver Handbook.

It’s not about guessing signs or rules. Make sure you understand why each answer is correct. That way, even if the question is worded differently on the real test, you’ll still get it right.

Don’t just keep taking the same test. Rotate through different versions (we have four full tests) and make note of what you get wrong. Re-study those topics in the handbook.

Your brain needs rest to absorb information. Study in short bursts—30 to 45 minutes—then take a quick break. It actually helps you remember more.

Sounds basic, but it works. Being well-rested improves focus and reaction time—both on the test and on the road.

Watch for words like not, always, or unless—they can change the meaning of the question. Don’t rush. You’ve got time.

Even if you miss a few practice questions, that’s part of the process. Every mistake is a chance to get better before the real thing.

🚫 Commonly Missed Questions on the Colorado Permit Test

Even students who study hard can miss these tricky topics on the written permit exam. Make sure you’re solid on the areas below—they often show up, and they often trip people up.

It’s easy to recognize signs by color or symbol—but what about shape? Octagons always mean stop. Triangles mean yield. Understanding what a sign means just from its shape is an essential part of the test—and a commonly missed question.

Do you know who must yield in a four-way stop? What about when turning left across traffic? Understanding who has the right-of-way and who must yield in different driving scenarios is something many students overlook.

If your tire blows out on the highway, should you brake hard, accelerate, or steer sharply? (Hint: none of those!) The test includes questions on how to safely respond to emergencies like brake failure, skidding, and tire blowouts—and many students guess incorrectly.

How far in advance should you signal a turn? When do you need to dim your high beams? How far from a curb can you legally park? Questions about specific distances are easy to forget—but they’re important, and they show up often.

You need to know what BAC means, the legal limits for drivers under 21 vs. over 21, and the difference between DUI and DWAI. Colorado’s Expressed Consent Law is also commonly tested—make sure you know it!
