What Is the 4 Hour Driver Awareness Program?

The short answer

Ours is a 4 hour live class, taught online over Zoom.

Some schools teach theirs in a classroom. We feel those sessions can wander off track, and joining online fits around school, work and family far better.

Our class is state-approved, so if you are 15½ to 16 right now it fulfills the driver education requirement for your permit. From January 1, 2027, it will fulfill the new requirement for 18, 19 and 20 year olds.

Which Ages Need the 4 Hour Class? Adult Drivers Ed in 2027

When does the student plan to get their permit?

How old is the student currently?

14½ to 15½

At 14½ the student can start a state approved 30 hour course, pass the permit test, and get their permit at 15. The permit is then held for 12 months, with 50 hours of supervised driving logged, before the driver's license test. Getting licensed before 16½ also takes 6 hours of professional lessons. Our 4 hour class does not cover this age.

30 hour classroom packages 30 hour online packages
15½ to 16

This is the age our 4 hour class is built for. Take it now, get your permit before January 1, 2027, and you will never need the 30 hour course. If you wait until 2027 to get a permit, you will need to take a 30 hour course. The permit is then held for 12 months, with 50 hours of supervised driving logged, before the driver's license test.

16 to 18

No course is required for a permit at this age today. The student passes the permit test, then holds the permit for 12 months, or until they turn 18 if that comes first, before the driver's license test. Starting January 1, 2027, anyone under 18 who does not already have a permit will be required to take a 30 hour course to get one. Get the permit before then and it will not apply to you.

18 to 20

Get your permit at 18, 19 or 20 before January 1, 2027 and no course is required at all, now or later. Starting in 2027, anyone in that age group without a permit will be required to take our 4 hour class or a 30 hour course first. There is no waiting period at 18 and over, so the driver's license test can follow as soon as the permit is issued.

Straight answers

Questions About the Class, Your Permit and the DMV

The class

Is the 4 hour driver awareness class the same as EDAP/MDAP?

Yes. Colorado law calls it a prequalification driver awareness program, and the state's rules for driving schools call it the Expanded Driver Awareness Program. The Colorado Department of Revenue approves these programs, and only a certified driving school can teach one. All of our packages include this state-approved class.

Is the 4 hour class the same as Alive at 25?

Yes for Colorado's requirement, and no for everything else. Both are state-approved driver awareness programs, so either one meets it.

The difference is who teaches it. We filmed our own videos around Colorado, and the people teaching your class are state-certified instructors who also routinely give driving lessons and drive tests. We know Colorado, and we know what new drivers here need.

We are also a full-service driving school, so we can take you through the whole thing: this class, your permit test, your driving lessons and your driving test.

Is adult drivers ed required in Colorado?

Not yet. At 18 and over, no course is required for a Colorado permit today.

Starting January 1, 2027, 18, 19 and 20 year olds will be required to take driver education first, and this 4 hour class meets that requirement. A 30 hour course meets it too. At 21 and over, no course is ever required.

You can take the class now and still use it, as long as your permit is issued within 6 months of finishing.

Timing

If I get my permit in 2026, do I have to take a class again in 2027?

No. The DMV says the new education rules apply to permits issued from January 1, 2027. Get your permit before then and you stay under today's rules. A 15½ year old who takes this class and gets the permit before the new year will not need the 30 hour course.

How long is a Colorado learner's permit good for?

A Colorado learner's instruction permit is valid for three years from the date of issuance or until your 21st birthday, whichever comes first.

Getting your permit

What happens at my DMV permit appointment?

Book an appointment at a driver license office and bring the documents on the DMV's list. Under 18? Bring a parent, guardian or another adult 21 or older with a Colorado driver license to sign the Affidavit of Liability. They can also sign it ahead of time in front of a notary. You'll take a vision exam, give fingerprints and have your photo taken, and you'll leave with a temporary paper permit. The card usually comes in the mail within 30 days.

How much is a learner's permit in Colorado?

Colorado's permit fee is $20 for a REAL ID permit or $23 for a Standard permit, paid at your DMV appointment. The DMV lists every fee on its fees page.

Do I need a parent with me to get a permit at 18, 19 or 20?

Usually not. At 18 or older you don't need the Affidavit of Liability that drivers under 18 need. The exception is if you're under 21 without a government ID. Then a parent or legal guardian has to sign an Affidavit of Identity and bring proof of guardianship.

Driving on your permit

Can you drive alone with a permit at 18?

No. On a permit, you drive with a licensed driver who is 21 or older in the front passenger seat, whatever your age.

When does a teen need the 6 hours of driving lessons?

It depends on when the permit was issued. A teen who got a permit before turning 15½ needs 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training to be licensed before 16½. A teen who got the permit at 15½ or later is not licensed before 16½, so the hours are not required for them. Lessons are still the fastest way to get a new driver ready for the road, and MDAP Premium and Complete include them.

I have a permit from another state. Do I need a Colorado one?

Yes, if you're 18 or older and want to take your driving test here. A Colorado driving tester can't test an adult on an out-of-state permit, so get a Colorado permit first.
