Denver driving tests are given seven days a week, from four offices across the city. Same-day tests are common, and walk-ins are welcome when an examiner is free. Booking ahead is the only way to guarantee your time. Your state-certified examiner follows a state-approved route. After passing, most drivers can upgrade their permit to a driver's license online that day without visiting the DMV.

Colorado driver's license offices, the ones most people call the DMV, run by appointment only. The Denver office is about a minute from our Montbello office at 12015 E 46th Ave, and for an adult starting without a permit that turns two trips into one.
Take the permit appointment first, then book your drive test with us for right after it. Only drivers under 18 have to hold a permit for a year. An adult can pick up the permit, drive the test at Montbello, and move to a full license online without a second trip.
Price and Availability
Any of the four Denver offices will take a walk-in whenever an examiner is free. Nothing is set aside for you though, so it can still mean waiting or coming back another day.

Only a booked appointment is held for you. Walk-ins fill whatever gaps the booked drivers leave.

Spanish-speaking examiners can be selected directly on the booking calendar. Choose Examen de Manejo when you book, and your confirmation, reminder texts, and emails will arrive in Spanish. The prueba de manejo uses the same state-approved testing process and scoring standards as every other Denver driving test.
American Driving Academy is a third-party testing site, which means the state authorizes us to give the Colorado road test. Every examiner is certified by the state of Colorado, and across four Denver offices they test drivers all day, so the instructions you hear are the same ones every other driver hears, delivered the same way.
Our examiners include educators, military and law enforcement veterans, professional drivers and licensing specialists. A calm examiner does not make the Colorado driving exam easier. What it does is stop nerves from costing you points you would not otherwise lose.

American Driving Academy offers bilingual examiners and Spanish-speaking phone support. The scheduling calendar marks which examiners are bilingual, so you can choose one yourself when you book. Booking an Examen de Manejo also switches your confirmation, reminder texts and emails into Spanish.
The prueba de manejo is the same test. The route, the scoring standards and the criteria do not change for any driver.
At the end of the appointment your examiner goes back through what they saw: the habits that were solid, and the specific moments that cost points. You get that breakdown whether you passed or not.
If the result was not the one you wanted, it is the fastest way to know exactly what to work on before the $65 retest.
Most driving tests are taken in one of our vehicles, which are serviced on a routine schedule. Using ours means there is no vehicle paperwork to gather and nothing about your own car that can hold the appointment up. Every car has been state-inspected and carries a passenger-side brake, an instructor mirror and a dash camera.
The one exception is an interlock restriction on your permit. Then you bring your own vehicle, and it has to meet all five conditions listed in the Colorado Driving Test Requirements above.
A practice driving test covers the same ground as the real drive test, with an instructor scoring as you go and a full breakdown at the end. Nothing from it reaches the DMV.
If you would rather build the skills first, a private Denver driving lesson buys you two hours with a state-certified instructor. Neither one guarantees a pass, but both tell you where you actually stand before test day.
Come to a complete stop before the stop line, the crosswalk or the sidewalk. The test is whether the ground beside your window has stopped moving.
Residential streets in Denver are 20 mph unless a sign says otherwise. Watch closely for school zones and adjust smoothly instead of braking late.
Your hands start at 9 and 3, or at 10 and 2, and come back there once the turn is done. Use hand over hand or push-pull to get through it.
Check the rearview mirror after intersections. Before changing lanes, signal, then check the rearview and side mirrors, then look over your shoulder.

Wheel B is the one that passes. A rolling stop is one of the easiest points to lose, because the examiner is watching the wheel, not the speedometer.
The check from the driver's seat: look at the ground outside your window and make sure it has stopped moving.
Not quite. That wheel is still turning.
Wheel B is the answer. Your wheels have to be fully stopped behind the line, not creeping. Rolling through a stop sign is one of the most common reasons a driver loses points.

A right turn always finishes in the closest lane, the one beside the kerb. Swinging wide into the far lane is a marked error even when the road is completely empty.
If Freddy needs the far lane, he gets there afterwards as a separate lane change, with a signal and a blind spot check.

Freddy should finish in Lane B, the one closest to him beside the kerb. Turning wide across into the far lane is marked against you even on an empty road, and it is a habit examiners look for.

Rear-view mirror, driver side mirror, then a look over your left shoulder. The mirrors tell you what is behind you. Only the shoulder check covers the blind spot the mirrors miss.
Signal before you move, and leave the signal on the whole way through the change.
That one is for a right lane change.
You are moving left, so your blind spot is on the driver's side. Keep looking, there are still checks to find.
Start the car, then hit the Space Bar to stop it.
The car has not started yet.
Correct. You stopped short of the sidewalk.
That is the stop that counts. Your first stop happens before any part of your car reaches the sidewalk, every time, even when a bush means you cannot see a thing from back there.
Then you creep forward into the green area and stop again for a proper look. A second and even a third stop is fine. Rolling straight through on the first one is not.
Too late. You were already on the sidewalk.
Your bumper crossed the sidewalk before the car stopped, so that first stop does not count. People walk there, and an examiner marks it the moment it happens.
Stop with the bumper short of the sidewalk first. Once you have stopped there, move up into the green area and stop again to see past the bush.
Much too late. You rolled all the way in.
You stopped in the green area. That is where your second look happens, not your first, and anything already coming along the cross street had no warning you were there.
The order is what matters: stop before the sidewalk, then creep forward, then stop again where you can actually see.
I practiced in the same area where the academy is located, which made the test much easier. Sandy was very respectful and gave clear instructions, even though English is my second language.

You are required to pass the driver's license test in order to get your driver's license. After passing, you may be eligible to get your license that same day without even having to visit the DMV.
