Erie Driver's License Testing

Take your Erie driving test at our Old Town office on Briggs Street. You may walk in if an examiner is free, but only booking ahead secures your time. After you pass, we send the result to the DMV so most drivers can upgrade their permit to a driver's license online that day. A state-certified examiner conducts the test on a route approved by Colorado, and the drive takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

What Do You Need for a Colorado Driving Test?

Driver's Permit Requirements

Required
  • A valid Colorado learner's permit is required at every age. Drivers under 18 may use an out-of-state permit for one test.
  • The out-of-state option requires a pre-registration code before your appointment.
  • Anyone under 18 must have held their permit for a full 12 months, Colorado or out-of-state.
  • If your permit carries a corrective-lenses restriction, wear your glasses or contacts.

Interlock Restrictions

Only if this applies to you

If your permit has an interlock restriction, you must bring your own vehicle, and it must meet all five requirements:

  • An interlock device is installed
  • Plates are on the front and back
  • Insurance and registration are valid
  • The windshield has no cracks
  • All doors and lights work

What to Expect on Test Day

15 to 20 minutes driving
  • Arrive on time and ready to test. Review our Refund Policy before your appointment in case your plans change.
  • You will test in one of our vehicles unless an interlock restriction requires you to bring your own.
  • The driving test follows a state-approved route with no freeway driving or parallel parking.
  • Colorado's required standards and criteria decide how your driving skills test is scored.

After Passing Your Test

We file the result

We submit your passing result to the DMV.

  • Most drivers can upgrade their permit to a driver's license online the same day. The state mails the physical license, and a digital ID is available in the MyColorado app on your phone.
  • TLP residents and undocumented residents cannot complete the upgrade online. They must visit a DMV office, so schedule that appointment early rather than waiting until after the driving test.

Looking for a Driver's License Office in Erie?

If you are searching for an Erie driver's license office because you need the Colorado road test, Old Town Erie on Briggs Street is where it happens. American Driving Academy is a state-authorized third-party testing site rather than a government office, and the driving test is booked straight from our calendar. State driver license offices still handle the issuance of the license, whether it be in-person or online.

Four Things Examiners Watch During a Driving Test

Complete Stops

At a required stop, come to rest before the line, crosswalk, or sidewalk. Confirm there is no movement, then check both directions.

Speed Limits

The limit on unposted Erie residential streets is 30 mph. Follow posted limits and active school zones, and slow before the new limit begins.

Hand Position

Begin with your hands at 9 and 3 or 10 and 2, and return them there after each turn. Steer hand-over-hand or push-pull through the turn.

Mirror and Shoulder Checks

For each lane change, signal first. Next, check the rearview mirror and side mirror, then look over your shoulder before entering the lane.

Question 1 of 3

You are stopped at a stop sign. What should your wheels be doing?

Pick the wheel that would pass.

Correct, wheels need to be FULLY stopped

Wheel B is the one that passes. A rolling stop is one of the easiest points to lose, because the examiner is watching the wheel, not the speedometer.

The check from the driver's seat: look at the ground outside your window and make sure it has stopped moving.

Not quite. That wheel is still turning.

Wheel B is the answer. Your wheels have to be fully stopped behind the line, not creeping. Rolling through a stop sign is one of the most common reasons a driver loses points.

Freddy the Bear is turning right. Which lane should he finish in?

Tap a lane on the diagram.

Freddy

Correct. Lane B, the nearest one.

A right turn always finishes in the closest lane, the one beside the kerb. Swinging wide into the far lane is a marked error even when the road is completely empty.

If Freddy needs the far lane, he gets there afterwards as a separate lane change, with a signal and a blind spot check.

Not quite. Lane A is the far lane.

Freddy should finish in Lane B, the one closest to him beside the kerb. Turning wide across into the far lane is marked against you even on an empty road, and it is a habit examiners look for.

You are changing lanes to the left. Which checks do you make?

Tap every check you would do. There are three.

0 of 3 found

That is the full check.

Rear-view mirror, driver side mirror, then a look over your left shoulder. The mirrors tell you what is behind you. Only the shoulder check covers the blind spot the mirrors miss.

Signal before you move, and leave the signal on the whole way through the change.

That one is for a right lane change.

You are moving left, so your blind spot is on the driver's side. Keep looking, there are still checks to find.

A bush is blocking the corner. Where should you make your first stop?

Start the car, then hit the Space Bar to stop it.

STOP You can see from here Sidewalk ahead

The car has not started yet.

Correct. You stopped short of the sidewalk.

That is the stop that counts. Your first stop happens before any part of your car reaches the sidewalk, every time, even when a bush means you cannot see a thing from back there.

Then you creep forward into the green area and stop again for a proper look. A second and even a third stop is fine. Rolling straight through on the first one is not.

Too late. You were already on the sidewalk.

Your bumper crossed the sidewalk before the car stopped, so that first stop does not count. People walk there, and an examiner marks it the moment it happens.

Stop with the bumper short of the sidewalk first. Once you have stopped there, move up into the green area and stop again to see past the bush.

Much too late. You rolled all the way in.

You stopped in the green area. That is where your second look happens, not your first, and anything already coming along the cross street had no warning you were there.

The order is what matters: stop before the sidewalk, then creep forward, then stop again where you can actually see.
