Start your Fort Collins driving test at our South College Avenue location. When an examiner is free you may walk in, but only booking ahead reserves a time. After passing, we enter your result in the DMV database, so most drivers can upgrade to a driver's license online that day. The route is approved by Colorado, and a state-certified examiner watches your driving for roughly 15 to 20 minutes.

Planning to arrive without a reservation? Call (303) 623-1404 first. A walk-in may be taken when an examiner has an opening, while a scheduled time is held only for the person who booked it.
Turning up without a booking can mean a wait, and the day may already be full before you arrive. We highly recommend using the booking calendar to make an appointment.
If you do drive over and the day is full, you can book the next open time from your phone before you leave.

The Colorado driver's license office that most people call the Fort Collins DMV is a 30 second walk from our door at 2900 S College Ave. American Driving Academy is a state-authorized third-party testing site, so the driving test happens here and is booked on our calendar. State driver license offices still handle the issuance of the license, whether it be in-person or online.
The license office runs by appointment only, so book your appointment to get your learner's permit first, and put your driving test with us straight after it. An adult starting without a permit can collect the permit next door, pass the test here, and finish the upgrade online the same day. A driver under 18 cannot do it in one trip, because the permit has to be held a full 12 months before testing.
You will test with a patient, friendly examiner who gives you every direction with plenty of time to act on it.
If you have questions before you set off, ask your examiner. Our examiners train continuously, and that is what keeps the Colorado driving exam fair and straightforward.
The days and times we test can vary, so if nothing suits on the day you want, look at the following week too. Evening and weekend appointments show up some weeks and not others.
That matters most to students and to anyone working a full day, because the appointment does not have to come out of school or work hours.
The calendar identifies which open appointments are with a Spanish-speaking examiner, so look for that if you want your drive test in Spanish.

After the drive, your examiner goes through the result and ties it to things that actually happened on the route. You leave knowing which parts of the drive were solid and which ones to work on.
If you need a second attempt, the Fort Collins retest is $65, and that feedback is where your practice starts.
For most Fort Collins appointments the test car is ours. They are compact four-door sedans, mostly Kia Fortes.
A permit with an interlock restriction changes that: you must bring your own vehicle. Check it against the five conditions listed under Interlock Restrictions before you drive over.
A practice driving test gives you a test-style evaluation before your scheduled appointment. It is not a driving lesson, and nothing from it reaches the DMV.
You leave with specific feedback about what looks ready and what needs more work. The practice result guides your preparation rather than forecasting how the real drive test will go. If what you actually want is teaching, book a Fort Collins driving lesson instead.
Stop before the line, crosswalk, or sidewalk, and make sure the wheels have fully stopped turning. Look both ways, then go when the path is clear.
Read the speed signs as they change and watch for an active school zone. The limit on unposted Fort Collins residential streets is 25 mph.
While driving, set your hands at 9 and 3 or 10 and 2. Steer hand over hand or push-pull through the turn, and do not let the wheel slide back into place.
Signal first, then check the rearview and the side mirror. Look over your shoulder, confirm the blind spot is clear, then move into the next lane.

Wheel B is the one that passes. A rolling stop is one of the easiest points to lose, because the examiner is watching the wheel, not the speedometer.
The check from the driver's seat: look at the ground outside your window and make sure it has stopped moving.
Not quite. That wheel is still turning.
Wheel B is the answer. Your wheels have to be fully stopped behind the line, not creeping. Rolling through a stop sign is one of the most common reasons a driver loses points.

A right turn always finishes in the closest lane, the one beside the curb. Swinging wide into the far lane is a marked error even when the road is completely empty.
If Freddy needs the far lane, he gets there afterwards as a separate lane change, with a signal and a blind spot check.

Freddy should finish in Lane B, the one closest to him beside the curb. Turning wide across into the far lane is marked against you even on an empty road, and it is a habit examiners look for.

That is the full check.
Rear-view mirror, driver side mirror, then a look over your left shoulder. The mirrors tell you what is behind you. Only the shoulder check covers the blind spot the mirrors miss.
Signal before you move, and leave the signal on the whole way through the change.
That one is for a right lane change.
You are moving left, so your blind spot is on the driver's side. Keep looking, there are still checks to find.
Start the car, then hit the Space Bar to stop it.
The car has not started yet.
Correct. You stopped short of the sidewalk.
That is the stop that counts. Your first stop happens before any part of your car reaches the sidewalk, every time, even when a bush means you cannot see a thing from back there.
Then you creep forward into the green area and stop again for a proper look. A second and even a third stop is fine. Rolling straight through on the first one is not.
Too late. You were already on the sidewalk.
Your bumper crossed the sidewalk before the car stopped, so that first stop does not count. People walk there, and an examiner marks it the moment it happens.
Stop with the bumper short of the sidewalk first. Once you have stopped there, move up into the green area and stop again to see past the bush.
Much too late. You rolled all the way in.
You stopped in the green area. That is where your second look happens, not your first, and anything already coming along the cross street had no warning you were there.
The order is what matters: stop before the sidewalk, then creep forward, then stop again where you can actually see.
